Aside the fact that they all speak in accented english most movies with one of more english speaking actors that portray other countries do is made worse by some clumsy dubbing it feels like written by someone that speak bad english the editing is quite bizarre. I liked the book by magda szabo this movie does not do justice to the novel. An author forms a strange bond with her eccentric maid that will have a lasting effect on both women. The film which takes place in 1960s hungary opens with mirren s character landing a job as a maid for a well off married couple of magda martina gedeck and tibor károly eperjes.

Magda is an aspiring writer hungry for inspiration and impressionable enough to quickly fall under the spell of her no nonsense new servant.
