I was so tempted to make a countertop out of painted mdf by the way. Pine is a soft wood that is commonly used with furniture but you may want to choose yellow pine over white pine if you are opting to use a softer wood. 5 inches times 5 boards comes out to 25 inch depth for the countertop.
